American Foxhound

The American Foxhound is a breed of dog that is a cousin of the English Foxhound. They are good hunting dogs that commonly use in mountain hunting. This breed likes the company of other breeds of dogs but it can be a single companion too especially in hiking.

American Foxhound is a great family pet companion too, they are sweet, loyal, and easy going dogs. A small space like an apartment is not suitable for them to live, a house with a backyard is more suitable for them where they can play and run freely. American Foxhound Appearance

American foxhounds have straight-boned long legs and their chest is narrow. It has a long muzzle, and a large, domed skull. The ears are wide and low-set. The color of their eyes is hazel or brown and is large and wide-set. Their coat is short and hard, it can be any color but the most common combination is black, white, and tan.

This breed is known to have a musical bark, called a bay, when it is hunting that can be heard for miles, probably inherited from the Grand Bleu de Gascogne’s signature howl. They are one of the rarest breeds in the American Kennel Club.

They do shed a lot of furs that’s why it is recommended to brush their fur daily. It is better to bathe and groom them as necessary and used the right shampoo and conditioner for their fur to make it soft and smell good. It is best to keep their dental hygiene and nail care properly, periodontal disease is very common to dog whatever their size, brush their teeth several times a week to help remove tartar and bacteria and maintain the good condition of their teeth. Trim their nails once or twice a month to prevent injury in your dogs, long nails can also cause arthritis or other health concern in dogs. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent our dog’s legs from getting scratched when they excitedly jump up to greet us.

American Foxhound Size

American Foxhound weighs around 27-29 kg (60 to 65 pounds) for females and 29-32 kg. (65 to 70 pounds) for males, their height ranges around 53-61 cm (21 to 24 inches) for females and 56-64 cm (22 to 25 inches) for males, they are taller and rangier than their cousin, the English Foxhound.

American Foxhound is a gentle, sweet, affectionate, and easygoing dog to their owner however, they may act shy and reserved when around strangers. They are very active dogs with very high energy.

They require a lot of exercise and do their best in a place where they have room to run. If they live in a suburban area such as a neighborhood, they should have a fenced-in yard and be taken on multiple walks daily.

Like other breeds of dogs early socialization can make them comfortable with other dogs in the house, they are also a good playmate to the children as long as we teach the children how to handle the dogs for the safety of the dogs and the children themselves.

American Foxhound has an average life span of 12 to 14 years, they are generally healthy but like other breeds of dogs, they are also prone to some diseases. Not all of them will get any or all of these diseases but the following are the common diseases they can have.

Hip DysplasiaIt is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints.
Allergies
It is a misguided reaction to foreign substances by the body’s immune system of your dogs.
Retinal DysplasiaIt can reduce the vision of your dog’s eye and is usually a genetically inherited condition. This condition does not cause your pet any pain.
Thrombocytopathy It is caused by poorly functioning platelets and results in abnormal or excessive bleeding from minor bumps or cuts. The treatment is based on the cause and severity of the condition.
