The Bloodhound is a breed of dog used for hunting deer, wild boar and for tracking loss people, its ancestors were bred in medieval France. Bloodhound Dog was known for its ability to discern human scent over a great distance, they have an extraordinarily keen sense of smell that is combined with a strong and great tracking instinct. Their appearance is sweet, lovely and unique that makes people love them.

Bloodhound Appearance

Bloodhound is a large breed of dogs weighing 36 to 45 kg. for females and 41 to 50 kg. for males, they are 22.83 to 25.20 inches for females and 25.20 to 27.17 inches for males. Because of their muscular body, they have a strong appearance. Their coat is short and dense, the only color of its fur that is acceptable is black, liver, tan, and red.

Like other breeds of dogs, it is recommended to brush their fur occasionally especially during summer where they shed a lot. It is better to bathe and groom them as necessary and used the right shampoo and conditioner for their fur to make it soft and smell good.

It is best to keep their dental hygiene and nail care properly, periodontal disease is very common to dog whatever their size, brush their teeth several times a week to help remove tartar and bacteria and maintain the good condition of their teeth. Trim their nails once or twice a month to prevent injury in your dogs, long nails can also cause arthritis or other health concern in dogs. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent our dog’s legs from getting scratched when they excitedly jump up to greet us.

Bloodhound Personality

Bloodhound Dog is a very sweet, gentle, lovely and affectionate dog good as a family pet, they are very good in following the scent and used for hunting deer, wild boar and for tracking loss people. They are shy to people that make them not good as a watchdog but because of their extraordinary keen sense of smell that is combined with a strong and great tracking instinct, they are good as a hunting dog. They love their owner a lot that they don’t mind cuddling on the couch for a long period of time. It is not advisable to live in a small place or apartment if you have this kind of breed of dog, it is better if you have a yard or park where they can run freely to release their energy.

Early socialization can make them good to other animals in the house, they are also a good playmate to the children as long as we teach the children how to handle the dogs for the safety of the dogs and the children itself.

Bloodhound Health

Bloodhound has an average life span of 7 to 12 years, they are generally healthy but like other breeds of dogs, they are also prone to some diseases. Not all of them will get any or all of these diseases but the following are the common diseases they can have.

Ectropion It is a common condition of dogs where the lower eyelids droop or roll out. It can affect one or both eyes. It is often inherited and has a strong tendency to occur in dogs with loose droopy skin.
Hip DysplasiaIt is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints.
It is a misguided reaction to foreign substances by the body’s immune system of your dogs.
Skin Fold Dermatitis This condition occurs when skin folds are deep, causing abnormal rubbing and retaining moisture in an area that’s both warm and not well-aerated.
Ear InfectionsIt is a common canine health problem, and it can be caused by allergies, yeast, ear mites, bacteria, hair growth deep in the ear canal, and more.
