Can Dogs Eat Clams?

Dog can safely eat clams (as long as he doesn’t have shellfish allergies) in small amount and in moderation. Clams are great source of protein, omega-3 fatty acids, and essential minerals like zinc, iron, and magnesium that is beneficial for dogs.

Only cooked clams (steamed or boiled) without any seasoning you should feed to your dog, clams cooked with sauce or any other ingredients like garlic and salt is not safe for dogs.

Steamed or boiled meat clams can be feed to your dog as an ingredient in his wet or dry food once in a while, you can also feed it as treat. Make sure to remove the shell of the clams before you feed to your dog because it is choking hazard and might result to blockage in the intestine if eaten by accident.

Note: Clams filter the water and all the toxins end up in their tissue, if your dog eat a large amount of clams that is contaminated with bacteria or viruses in its flesh, it can cause paralytic shellfish poisoning. Check carefully the clams you will feed to your dog, commonly contaminated shellfish may have a tainted odor or taste.

Are Dogs Allergic to Clams?

Like human dogs can also be allergic to shellfish like shrimps, lobster, scallops, and clams so make sure to talk to your vet before you try to feed any shellfish food to your dog.

A small amount of clams won’t harm your dog if he doesn’t have shellfish allergies however if he has and he accidentally ate clams the symptoms of allergies might appear once he starts eating or few minutes (usually 30 minutes) after.

Can dogs eat clamshell? The short answer is NO, clamshells or any other seashells can cause a blockage in the digestive tract and worse shells with a sharp edge can cut a place in your dog’s digestive system. Seashell is also a choking hazard so it’s very important to bring your dog to your vet immediately if he ate any seashells (especially if it is large in size).

Depending on the dog’s size, small shells will most likely pass through your dog’s intestinal tract and end up in their stool but if it large and sharp immediate action will prevent the worse thing to happen, CALL YOUR VET.

Can Dogs Eat Clam Chowder?

Chowder is a type of soup or stew with milk or cream, there are different variations of chowder soap it can be seafood or vegetable. Home-made Clam Chowder is very easy to cook and can really be eaten in any type of weather, if you love cooking and eating Clam Chowder in your house you must be wondering if you can share some with your lovely pets (especially dog) but the short answer is NO.

Although clam chowder’s main ingredients are clams that are healthy for dogs the other ingredients of the soup like onion, garlic, milk/cream, bacon, salt, and more are not safe and toxic for dogs.

  • Onion and garlic whether in cooked or powder form is toxic for dogs even in small amounts.
  • Some dogs are lactose intolerant it is a digestive disorder caused by the inability to digest lactose which is present in dairy products like cheese, butter, ice cream, milk, etc.
  • Salt is can lead to sodium ion poisoning in dogs if taken in large amounts.
  • Bacon has preservatives and we know that preservative foods are high in sodium which is not healthy and toxic for dogs.

Can Dogs Drink/Eat Clam Juice?

Clam juice is usually used as one of the ingredients of some foods but sometimes it also use for some beverages like hot clam juice, hot clam soda, hot ginger clam broth, hot celery punch, hot clam cream, clam nightcap, tomato clam broth, and more.

Clam juice is typically prepared from the liquid obtained from steamed clams or steaming fresh clams in water with salt, collecting the extracted liquid known as clam extract or clam liquor, and then filtering it, it may be prepared fresh or obtained in prepared bottled form.

Although clams (plain cooked without any seasoning) usually steamed or boiled are safe and healthy food/treats for dogs in small amount and in moderation it is different when it is bottled clam juice because it is not healthy for dogs because of some ingredients used to make it like salt, but the plain collected liquid extract of clams without any seasoning (plain flavor only) is can be added to your dog’s meal in a small amount just make sure you do not give it to your dog frequently.

Can Dogs Eat Clam Cake?

The short answer is No. A dog should not eat clam cake or any deep-fried food, clam cake also has various other ingredients that are harmful to dogs such as salt, flour, milk, leavening agent (typically baking powder), and more.

If your dog ate clam cake by accident he might experience a stomach ache if he ate a small amount but if it is a large amount he might experience vomiting and diarrhea, in this case, call your vet immediately for assessment and treatment.
