Can Dogs Get Sick from Eating Cockroach?

Naturally, dogs have a strong prey drive even they have been domesticated. It is normal if you see dogs chasing after other animals like deer, rabbits, and insects such as cockroaches. If you see your dog chased cockroach there are two things he might do, kill and leave it or eat it, I know you just wish nothing with the two will happen because it is so disgusting but not all the time you can watch your dog. Cockroaches are very common insects you can find in offices, factories, houses, etc. Roaches can be found in many countries around the world, it can survive in all types of climate and areas.

In the United State, there are four common types of roaches you can find the German cockroach, the American cockroach, Oriental cockroaches, and Brown-banded cockroaches.

Can Dogs Get Sick from Eating Cockroach?

Dogs are possible to get sick from eating cockroach, cockroaches are not poisonous and don’t have any toxic in their body that can harm a dog however as much as possible it is advisable to keep away or prevent your dog from eating roaches because of the possibility that the insect can be harboring bacteria that eventually can cause harm to your dog.

A cockroach is also a carrier of intestinal diseases, such as diarrhea, dysentery, typhoid fever, and cholera that can affect both humans and animals. If your dog ate a cockroach that is carrying the virus, bacteria, or disease he might be infected and will show the following symptoms:

Some dogs may be allergic to cockroaches and may suffer a reaction from eating one or more of these pests so preventing them from eating it will lessen the chance of them getting sick.

Roaches may have eaten poison or covered in a poison that’s intended to kill them, if your dog ate a roach that is poisoned it’s not automatically they will also get poisoned but the chances of your dog getting poisoned by eating cockroach are high if they consumed two or more cockroaches that have been poisoned.

  • Diarrhea
  • Lethargy
  • Heart problems
  • Stomach ache
  • Seizures
  • Uncoordinated gait
  • Liver/kidney failure

Even though in other countries like China, Mexico, Thailand, and Brazil are normal to eat insect as their delicacies it is still not advisable to let your lovely pets eat cockroaches, talk to your vet if you notice any unusual to your dog after he has accidentally eaten any type of insect.
