The Chinese Crested is a breed of dog that comes in the same litter but has two varieties, the with fur and without fur. They are commonly known as a hairless breed of dog that was created to be an invalid’s companion, they are athletic and can jump high tall to the fence but they have almost no desire to go out and run around like regular dogs, they are so devoted to its family and will love you so much, best as a pet companion.

Chinese Crested Appearance

The Chinese crested dog has appeared two different breeds, the Chinese Hairless Dog and the Chinese crested powder puff but hairlessness is an incomplete dominant trait within a single breed. Meaning both Hairless and Powderpuff varieties comes in the same litter.

The Chinese Hairless Dog has soft, humanlike skin, as well as tufts of fur on its paws and tail and long, flowing hair on its head. The skin of the Chinese Hairless Dog comes in a variety of colors, ranging from pale flesh to black. Hairless Chinese Crested Dogs often lack a full set of premolar teeth, but this is not considered a fault.

The Chinese crested powder puff has a long, silky soft coat, their look varies according to how it is groomed but when its fur is completely grown out on its face, it strongly resembles a terrier, their coats are seen in all colors and in combinations of mahogany, blue, lavender, or copper. They can be solid or spotted. They have large and erect ears.

Like other breeds of dog, it is better to bathe and groom them as necessary, used the right shampoo and conditioner for their fur to make it soft, silky, and smell good. It is best to keep their dental hygiene and nail care properly too, periodontal disease is very common to dog whatever their size, brush their teeth several times a week to help remove tartar and bacteria and maintain the good condition of their teeth. Trim their nails once or twice a month to prevent injury in your dogs, long nails can also cause arthritis or other health concern in dogs. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent our dog’s legs and our legs too from getting scratched when they excitedly jump up to greet us.


Chinese Crested is a small dog, they weigh around 2.3–5.4 kg for females and 2.3–5.4 kg for males, their height is around 23–30 cm for females and 28–33 cm for males.

The Chinese Crested is a sweet, clingy, elegant, graceful, and happy dog they don’t accept strangers easily but once they come to love you, they are like your stalker and you become their world. They are so affectionate especially to its owner and love to kiss and snuggle with them for a long period of time.

They can be stubborn too and although they are athletic enough there is a time that they will lie in bed for hours without moving a muscle. Chinese Crested is extremely intelligent there s a time like they can read your mind and will do what you expect them to do, they are easy to train and discipline which makes them good as a pet companion. Even though they are very sociable they still aloof to a stranger and will bark to alert you, they will do his duty as a guard dog properly to protect its home. Early socialization can make them good playmate to the children as long as we teach the children how to handle the dogs for the safety of the dogs and the children themselves.

Chinese Crested dog has an average life span of 13 to 15 years, They are generally healthy and don’t suffer from any known hereditary health problems, but like other breeds of dogs, they are also prone to some diseases. Not all of them will get any or all of these diseases but the following are the common diseases they can have.

Ear InfectionsIt is a common canine health problem, and it can be caused by allergies, yeast, ear mites, bacteria, hair growth deep in the ear canal, and more.
Periodontal Disease it is an inflammation of some or all of a tooth’s deep supporting structures, it happens when food and bacteria build up along the gums and form plaque that when combined with saliva and minerals will transform into calculus or also known as tartar.
Canine Eye Inflammation If your dog is suffering from eye inflammation in the outer skin and middle (muscle, connective tissue, and glands) of the eyes it is classified as Blepharitis, and if your dog is suffering from eye inflammation in the iris and ciliary body of the uvea of the eye it is classified as anterior uveitis, this may affect your dog’s vision and needs meditate veterinarian attention.
AllergiesIt is a misguided reaction to foreign substances by the body’s immune system of your dogs.
Hip DysplasiaIt is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints.
