About French Spaniel

The  French Spaniel also known as Epagneul Français, French Setter, and Canadian Setter is a  breed of dog developed in France and Canada, they were bred to become a hunting dog. Known for being loyal, sociable and gentle dog they become ideal pet companions in the house.

French Spaniel Appearance

The French Spaniel typically has a white coat with brown markings, the markings are irregular and can be small or dominating depending on the dog. Some are solid liver-colored or solid white body. Some can have a solid white head. Their coat is dense and has feathering along the back of the legs, belly, tail, and ear, their fur is shorter on the head. Like other breeds of dog, it is still advisable to bathe and groom them as necessary, used the right shampoo and conditioner for their fur to make it soft, silky, and smell good.

Epagneul Français coat makes them water-resistant, they can stay longer to cold and damp place. Dog Ear Infections is a common condition in dogs that can affect one or both ears, check their ears at least once to twice a week for redness or a bad odor it is the indication of Ear Infections. To prevent ear infections in dogs always make sure that it is clean, use a dog ear cleaner and gently wipe it using a cotton ball dampened with an ear cleaner to your dog’s ears.

It is best to keep their dental hygiene and nail care properly too, periodontal disease is very common to dog whatever their size, brush their teeth several times a week to help remove tartar and bacteria and maintain the good condition of their teeth. Trim their nails once or twice a month to prevent injury in your dogs, long nails can also cause arthritis or other health concern in dogs. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent our dog’s legs and our legs too from getting scratched when they excitedly jump up to greet us.

Size

As one of the largest breeds of Spaniel, they are one of the two tallest spaniel breeds, they are taller than the English Springer Spaniel, the Epagneul Français weigh around 20-27 kg, their height range from 54-59 cm for females and 55-61 cm for males.

Epagneul Français were bred to be hunters’ companions, so they are good retrieving and being alert of their surroundings. They are also intelligent and easy to train and discipline, with early socialization they can be a good companion with other animals in the house. They can be a good playmate with children too as long as you teach the children how to handle properly the dogs for the safety of the dogs and the children themselves.

Ear InfectionsIt is a common canine health problem, and it can be caused by allergies, yeast, ear mites, bacteria, hair growth deep in the ear canal, and more.
Periodontal Disease it is an inflammation of some or all of a tooth’s deep supporting structures, it happens when food and bacteria build up along the gums and form plaque that when combined with saliva and minerals will transform into calculus or also known as tartar.
Canine Eye Inflammation If your dog is suffering from eye inflammation in the outer skin and middle (muscle, connective tissue, and glands) of the eyes it is classified as Blepharitis, and if your dog is suffering from eye inflammation in the iris and ciliary body of the uvea of the eye it is classified as anterior uveitis, this may affect your dog’s vision and needs meditate veterinarian attention.
Hip DysplasiaIt is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints.
