German Shepherd Health
German Shepherd has an average life span of 10 to 15 years, They are generally healthy but like other breeds of dogs, they are also prone to some diseases. Not all of them will get any or all of these diseases but the following are the common diseases they can have.
|Ear Infections||The dog ear canal is more vertical than that of a human, forming an L-shape that tends to hold in a fluid. This makes dogs more prone to ear infections. Ear infections are typically caused by bacteria, yeast, or a combination of both. In puppies, ear mites can also be a source of infection.|
|Progressive Retinal Atrophy||It is characterized by the bilateral degeneration of the retina, causing progressive vision loss culminating in blindness.|
|Hypoglycemia||You may know this as low blood sugar. When your dog’s body is deprived of sugar, its main source of energy, his ability to function declines, and, in severe situations, loss of consciousness or even death can result.|
|Von Willebrand’s Disease||It can be found in both dogs and humans, this is a blood disorder that affects the clotting process. An affected dog will have symptoms such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums, prolonged bleeding from a surgery, prolonged bleeding during heat cycles or after whelping, and occasionally blood in the stool. This is usually diagnosed between three and five years of age, and it can’t be cured. But it can be managed with treatments.|
