Greyhound

The Greyhound or English Greyhound is a breed of dog that probably originated in Egypt, They were used for hunting, coursing game, and greyhound racing. They primarily hunt by sight and speed, rather than by scent and endurance as scent hounds do. Greyhound dog is a combination of long, powerful legs, deep chest, flexible spine, and slim build allows them to reach an average race speeds exceeding 64 kilometers per hour (40 mph) making them a race dog.

Greyhounds also compete in lure coursing, conformation, obedience, and agility, among other canine sports. People adore them for their lovely, calm disposition, in addition to their elegance and quickness. Fans of the breed report that these dogs have two speeds: full dash and complete couch potato. They are, however, extremely vulnerable to both extreme weather and loneliness. This is not a dog that should be left alone for long periods of time. You’ll have an affectionate, snuggle bug companion for life if you give them the love, attention, and exercise they need.

Greyhound Appearance

Greyhound dogs typically weigh 27 to 40 kg for males and 25 to 34 kg for females, with males standing 71 to 76 cm tall and females standing 66 to 71 cm tall. They have long, powerful legs, a deep chest, a flexible spine, and a thin frame; their cranium is long in contrast to its width, and their muzzle is extended. They hunt primarily by sight and speed rather than scent and endurance and can reach average race speeds of more than 64 kilometers per hour (40 mph) and a top speed of 70 kilometers per hour (43 mph) within 30 meters (98 feet), or six strides from the boxes, traveling at nearly 20 meters per second (66 feet per second) for the first 250 meters (820 feet) of a race.

The Greyhound dog coat is very short, it has a variety of colors like white, brindle, fawn, black, red, and blue (grey) that can appear uniquely or in combination. Like other breeds of dogs, it is recommended to brush their fur occasionally. It is also better to bathe and groom them as necessary and used the right shampoo and conditioner for their fur to make it soft, silky, and smell good.

It is best to keep their dental hygiene and nail care properly, periodontal disease is very common to dog whatever their size, brush their teeth several times a week to help remove tartar and bacteria and maintain the good condition of their teeth. Trim their nails once or twice a month to prevent injury in your dogs, long nails can also cause arthritis or other health concern in dogs. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent our dog’s legs from getting scratched when they excitedly jump up to greet us.

Greyhound Personality

Greyhound has a great personality, they are very friendly and non-aggressive dogs but sometimes they can be aloof and indifferent to strangers but overall they are calm, lazy, and affectionate especially to their own family. They’re intelligent and independent, even catlike in many ways. They do have a sensitive side and are quick to react to tensions in the home. They can become shy or timid with mistreatment, even if it’s unintentional. They love their owner a lot that they don’t mind playing or cuddling on the couch for a long period of time. Early socialization can make them good to other animals in the house, they are also a good playmate to the children as long as we teach the children how to handle the dogs for the safety of the dogs and the children themselves.

Greyhound Health

Greyhound dog has an average life span of 10 to 14 years, They are generally healthy but like other breeds of dogs, they are also prone to some diseases. Not all of them will get any or all of these diseases but the following are the common diseases they can have.

Ear Infections The dog ear canal is more vertical than that of a human, forming an L-shape that tends to hold in a fluid. This makes dogs more prone to ear infections. Ear infections are typically caused by bacteria, yeast, or a combination of both. In puppies, ear mites can also be a source of infection.
Progressive Retinal AtrophyIt is characterized by the bilateral degeneration of the retina, causing progressive vision loss culminating in blindness.
Anesthesia SensitivitySighthounds, including Greyhounds, are sensitive to anesthesia and some other drugs. A normal dose for any other dog of his size can kill a Greyhound, probably because of the breed’s low percentage of body fat.
Von Willebrand’s Disease
It can be found in both dogs and humans, this is a blood disorder that affects the clotting process. An affected dog will have symptoms such as nosebleeds, bleeding gums, prolonged bleeding from a surgery, prolonged bleeding during heat cycles or after whelping, and occasionally blood in the stool. This is usually diagnosed between three and five years of age, and it can’t be cured. But it can be managed with treatments.
