The Miniature Dachshund or simply Mini Dachshund is a short-legged breed of dog and the smaller form of the standard dachshund that originated in Germany. They were bred to hunt rabbits, mice, and other small animals. 

Sometimes called wiener dogbadger dog, or sausage dog, Mini Dachshund is loyal, active, and intelligent but a little bit stubborn that’s why patience in training is recommended.

Miniature Dachshund Appearance

Miniature Dachshund is really looked like sausage, they have a long body that is very near to the ground and very short legs. Due to their relatively long spine and short rib cage, they are prone to back problems so make sure to hold them properly and support their full body when carrying them. Mini Dachshund has three coat varieties like the Standard Dachshund: The Smooth, Long, and Wirehaired. The Smooth Haired Dachshund has a coat that is short and shiny, while the Long Haired Dachshund has a coat that is silky, shiny, slightly wavy, and has short feathering on legs and ears which gives them a stylish appearance, and last is the Wirehaired Dachshund, it is the most common coat variety in Germany, they have a double coat that comes in short, thick, hard hair on the topcoat with a softer undercoat.

Smooth and Long Haired Dachshund has the same coat color variation like red, cream, tan (including black and tan, chocolate and tan, blue and tan, or isabella and tan), dapple (merle), sable, brindle, and piebald. For Wirehaired Dachshund the most common color is wild boar but the other color variation for Smooth and Long Haired can also be seen to them.

Their coat is easy to maintain you can bathe and groom him or her at least once a week or as necessary, use the right shampoo and conditioner for their fur to make it soft, silky, and smell good.

Miniature Dachshund Personality

Like their larger version Miniature Dachshund was bred for hunting so they are very active, independent, and have a high prey drive but overall they are friendly, courageous, and determined dogs. They are also very intelligent but a little bit stubborn which is why training them will be challenging.

They are also a great family pet companion especially for city dwellers, they can live in an apartment as long as they can get enough outdoor exercise to help them keep fit, healthy, and well socialized.

Children below 10 years old are not an advisable playmate for Mini Dachshund, because of the small and short body of Dachshund they can get easy injure. Overall this dog is a great addition to your family as long as you can provide its needs such as a house, a regular health check-up, food, and lots of love.

Miniature Dachshund Health

The Miniature Dachshund has an average life span of 12 to 16 years, They are generally healthy and don’t suffer from any known hereditary health problems, but like other breeds of dogs, they are also prone to some diseases. Not all of them will get any or all of these diseases but the following are the common diseases they can have.

Dog bloat or gastric torsion (GDV)The stomach of a dog is filled with gas that causes of twisting of their stomach. If your dog experiencing this they need an immediate visit to the vet.
AllergiesIt is a misguided reaction to foreign substances by the body’s immune system of your dogs.
Ear Infections The dog ear canal is more vertical than that of a human, forming an L-shape that tends to hold in a fluid. This makes dogs more prone to ear infections. Ear infections are typically caused by bacteria, yeast, or a combination of both. In puppies, ear mites can also be a source of infection.
Intervertebral Disk DiseaseIt is a common health disorder exhibit by pain, a partial loss of limb function, paralysis, and sometimes a loss of feeling in the hind limbs.

Feeding & Nutrition

The recommended daily amount of high-quality dry food you can give to your Mini Dachshund is 1 cup a day, you can divide it into two meals or give it once a day. Don’t forget to have clean, fresh water available at all times for your dog.

Dog’s diet should be appropriate to their age, size, and activity. Mini Dachshund can do well in dry dog food formulated for a small-sized breed with high energy or even home-cooked food as long as it suits their needs. Don’t give too many treats because it can make them obese.
