Plott Hound

The Plott Hound is a large breed of dog belongs to Coonhound type, they were developed in North Carolina and was bred to hunt bears and wild boar, today they participated in tracking and other dog sports. Plott is suitable to live in the countryside where they have a wide space to roam.

Plott Hound Appearance

Plott Hound coat is smooth and glossy, it should be fine to medium in texture, short or medium in length. It comes in any shade of brindle ( Finely streaked or striped effect or pattern of black or tan fur with the fur of lighter or darker background color.) it can be tan, chocolate, yellow, buckskin, orange, gray, blue, liver, brown, and black. Plott is muscular, Unlike some other hounds, their skin is not baggy. They weigh around 18 to 25 kg for females and 23 to 27 kg for males, their height is 20 to 23 inches for females and 20 to 25 inches for males.

Like other breeds of dogs, it is recommended to brush their fur occasionally. It is better to bathe and groom them as necessary and used the right shampoo and conditioner for their fur to make it soft and smell good.

It is best to keep their dental hygiene and nail care properly, periodontal disease is very common to dog whatever their size, brush their teeth several times a week to help remove tartar and bacteria and maintain the good condition of their teeth. Trim their nails once or twice a month to prevent injury in your dogs, long nails can also cause arthritis or other health concern in dogs. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent our dog’s legs from getting scratched when they excitedly jump up to greet us.

The Plott Hound is a gentle, kind, bright, confident, and courageous dog, they love their owner a lot that they don’t mind cuddling on the couch for a long period of time, they are very loyal to his family and very suspicious to a stranger which makes them good as a watchdog. They can get along with the other dogs in the house but not like other breeds of hound they are not so friendly to the other animals.

They can be also a good playmate to the children as long as we teach the children how to handle the dogs for the safety of the dogs and the children themselves. They are good-natured and very sociable.

Plott Hound has an average life span of 12 to 14 years, they are generally healthy but like other breeds of dogs, they are also prone to some diseases. Not all of them will get any or all of these diseases but the following are the common diseases they can have.

Hip DysplasiaIt is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints.
CataractsIt is a cause of opacity on the lens of the eye, resulting in poor vision. The dog’s eye(s) will have a cloudy appearance.
Gastric Torsion (Bloat)Bloat is caused by the sudden influx of gas and air in the stomach. This causes the stomach to distend and twist and can cause death if it isn’t treated.
Episodic FallingIt is an ‘exercise-induced hypertonicity disorder’ meaning that there is increased muscle tone and the muscles are unable to relax.
