Standard Schnauzer Appearance

Standard Schnauzer is a versatile breed, it has a strong and healthy squarely built body, with long beards and eyebrows. It has a double coat, the outer coat is wiry, hard, and dense, with hairs that stand up from the skin while the undercoat is soft, it comes in pepper and salt or pure black (black standard schnauzer) color. The pepper and salt coloring is a combination of black and white hairs, and white hairs banded with black. Pepper and salt coloring can range from dark iron-gray to silver-gray.

Their double coat requires brushing with a stiff bristle or slicker brush about three times a week to prevent hair matting from forming in the undercoat. Wash or wipe their face after every meal because the stain from the food will get on their beard.

Dog Ear Infections is a common condition in dogs that can affect one or both ears, check their ears at least once to twice a week for redness or a bad odor it is the indication of Ear Infections. To prevent ear infections in dogs always make sure that it is clean, use a dog ear cleaner and gently wipe it using a cotton ball dampened with an ear cleaner to your dog’s ears.

It is best to keep their dental hygiene and nail care properly too, periodontal disease is very common to dog whatever their size, brush their teeth several times a week to help remove tartar and bacteria and maintain the good condition of their teeth. Trim their nails once or twice a month to prevent injury in your dogs, long nails can also cause arthritis or other health concern in dogs. Short, neatly trimmed nails keep the feet in good condition and prevent our dog’s legs and our legs too from getting scratched when they excitedly jump up to greet us.

Mittelschnauzer is usually a quiet and reserved breed, it is sweet and very affectionate they love to cuddle with their owner a lot, they are energetic and highly spirited which makes them get easily bored, they need plenty of exercise and attention. Having a yard or a place where they can run freely is advisable, like other dogs they need a daily exercise to keep them fit and healthy. A simple walk in the morning will help them keep healthy and well socialized.

They are intelligent and easy to train and discipline, with early socialization they can be a good companion with other animals in the house. They can be a good playmate with children too as long as you teach the children how to handle properly the dogs for the safety of the dogs and the children themselves.

Mittelschnauzer has an average life span of 13 to 16 years, They are generally healthy, but like other breeds of dogs, they are also prone to some diseases. Not all of them will get any or all of these diseases but the following are the common diseases they can have.

Skin Fold DermatitisThis condition occurs when skin folds are deep, causing abnormal rubbing and retaining moisture in an area that’s both warm and not well-aerated.
Ear InfectionsIt is a common canine health problem, and it can be caused by allergies, yeast, ear mites, bacteria, hair growth deep in the ear canal, and more.
Canine Eye InflammationThe Canine Eye Inflammation may occur with unknown causes or event but it is often connected to many serious health problems. If your dog is suffering from eye inflammation in the outer skin and middle (muscle, connective tissue, and glands) of the eyes it is classified as Blepharitis, and if your dog is suffering from eye inflammation in the iris and ciliary body of the uvea of the eye it is classified as anterior uveitis, this may affect your dog’s vision and needs meditate veterinarian attention.
Hip DysplasiaIt is an abnormal formation of the hip socket that, in its more severe form, can eventually cause crippling lameness and painful arthritis of the joints.
Squamous Cell CarcinomaIt is a tumor of skin cells. This cancer may occur on a toe or toes of dark-haired dogs, including Giant Schnauzers. Removal of the affected toe before cancer spreads to the chest cavity increases the chance of survival.
