Sunscreen For Dogs: Everything Pet Parent's Should Know

Summer is here, and as humans, we always take extra precautions to protect our selves from the harmful Ultraviolet ray from the sun, but how about our fur baby? Can dogs get sunburned? How can we protect them? Is Sunscreen safe for dogs?

Can Dogs Get Sunburned?

Dog’s can get a sunburn, in a long summer day our dogs spend more time in direct sunlight and just like us it will lead them to get sunburns, worse it can lead to other complications and diseases associated with sun exposure like skin damage, secondary infections, and skin cancer. So taking extra precautions is also important to our dogs, just like sunscreen helps protect us choosing a sunscreen appropriate for dogs will help reduce the risk of burns and skin cancer to them.

To help reduce the risk of sunburn to our dog in the summer, you can follow the tips below:

  • keep them indoors during the hours when the sun is highest
  • Sticking to shady areas on walks
  • Putting protective clothing on them
  • Avoiding a full shave of their coat
  • Put Sunscreen For Dogs on them

Predisposed Dogs

There are some dogs that are more at risk for sunburn than others like hairless dog breed, they need sun protection when they are outside for long periods of time. Even some dogs with thick coats of hair may experience hair loss from seasonal shedding or a health condition that may cause their coats to become very thin and may then be at greater risk for sunburn. Dogs with white or thin coats and dogs with light-pigmented noses and eyelids are also more at risk for sunburn.

Which Sunscreens Are Safe For Dogs?

Ask your veterinarian for a safe sunscreen for your dog, they will recommend you some product that is clinically tested and safe for your dog breed.

Your vet will have more experience and be able to provide you with more detailed information. You should absolutely NOT use a sunscreen designed for use by human adults on your dog, especially on areas that your dog can lick or chew.

Below is some dog-friendly sunscreen that you can check on Amazon:

  • Epi-Pet Sun Protector Spray for Pets – It protects your dog from UVA/UVB Rays. Safe and Quick Dry Formulation with Pleasant Vanilla Fragrance After Application that is Safe and ideal for all Breeds of Dogs and Horses
  • Bodhi Dog Sunscreen – It is a sun spray made with pet-friendly ingredients such as shea butter and jojoba butter to protect your dog from the sun but also to moisturize while your dog plays. The non-greasy formula will leave your dog fresh and ready for fun in the sun without the sticky feeling of sunscreen all over their body.

How to Apply Sunscreen to Dogs?

Like applying to the human body put it on the spots most exposed to sunshine, such as the bridge of the nose, ear tips, skin around his lips, groin, and inner thighs and anywhere else where pigmentation is light. When applying it to your dog’s head, be sure not to get any in his eyes. And once you apply the sunscreen, watch that your dog doesn’t lick it off for about 10 or 15 minutes – until it’s been absorbed.

You should apply sunscreen about 20 minutes before your dog goes out. And while he’s out in the sun, reapply the sunscreen every 4-6 hours or after your dog goes swimming or walking.

Note: Ask for your vet’s advice before putting any sunscreen to your dog for their safety.
